Glass Express Midlands attend event to entice next generation into industry

Glass Express Midlands’s Technical Manager, Kirsty Fortnam, recently represented the company at an “Employer Day” event hosted by George Salter Academy in West Bromwich. Sandwell Council organised the event as part of its Social Values initiative. It aimed to educate students from Year 7 to sixth form about various industries, including the glass industry.

Kirsty said: “The day started with year seven students speaking with local businesses from different industries, with at most ten minutes with each company representative. Most boys in year seven and year 8 wanted to be footballers, so we discussed having a plan B. I told the students a story about when I stumbled into the glass industry 15 years ago and how I had no idea there was so much involved. Many of the children were surprised and interested in learning about the different types of glass, including self-cleaning glass.”

Kirsty shared her insights into glass production and manufacturing complexities during the event. She emphasised the depth and breadth of the industry beyond its everyday use. Kirsty remarked that the day provided new insights for the students, much like her early discoveries in the industry. She reflected on her initial perception of glass and highlighted the potential and opportunities the industry offers anyone looking to join it.

Kirsty added: “The glass industry has a highly knowledgeable and productive older generation. However, like many industries, gaps will appear if the knowledge and experience aren’t passed on to younger individuals”.

Kirsty said the event was a great success, and hopes it inspires the next generation and bridges the gap between education and industry. Glass Express Midlands said it is proud to have been a part of such impactful conversations and remains committed to supporting and promoting opportunities for the younger generation.
