Building Our Skills: Top candidate in Sheffield needs a chance!

Building Our Skills recently welcomed seven candidates from Sheffield City Council’s NEET group onto its fenestration installation and employability skills training programme.

Each candidate is supported to develop practical skills, gain a better understanding of the industry and the workplace, and Building Our Skills is now actively trying to arrange interviews for them with industry employers.

One of the candidates has particularly impressed the Building Our Skills team with a combination of design, IT and leadership skills that could be valuable to the right business.

The candidate is a qualified architect by trade, although unfortunately their qualifications are not directly transferable to the UK.

Their design and IT skills could be particularly relevant to businesses working in areas such as conservatories, orangeries, garden rooms and other bespoke home improvement projects.

What has really stood out this week, however, is their approach to working with others.

They have demonstrated strong leadership skills and a genuine willingness to support those around them, qualities that could be valuable in a wide range of roles.

Mark Handley from Building Our Skills said: “Part of our commitment to every candidate on the programme is to help them get to an interview at the end of it.

“We’ve been really impressed with this candidate this week. They have a strong combination of design and IT skills, but what has particularly stood out is their leadership ability and willingness to support others.

“This learner understands that their existing professional qualifications aren’t transferable here and they’re not looking to go down that route. They’re looking for an opportunity where they can use the skills they already have and contribute to a business.

“We’d really like to hear from businesses in South Yorkshire, particularly Sheffield, that might be able to offer an interview or have a suitable opportunity. Sometimes all someone needs is the opportunity to show what they can do.”

He added: “We also have candidates from the same group who want to become fitter’s mates and start their career in installation, warehousing and distribution, and IT.

“If anybody has opportunities they could offer – for interview or even a short workplace trial, that would be great”.

The candidates have been funded onto the programme by Sheffield City Council, although there is flexibility around opportunities elsewhere in South Yorkshire if the right role comes up.”
