Machu PiGchu: Getting to Know Julie Holmes

In October, a team of brave PiGs will take on the iconic Inca Trail in Peru, all in aid of our Charity of the Year, Harry’s Pals.

In this series of articles, we’re introducing you to the people behind the challenge, finding out a little more about what inspired them to take part, how they’re preparing for the adventure and what they’re looking forward to most.

This article is all about Mila’s Julie Holmes. We caught up with her to find out more about their Machu PiGchu journey…

Why did you sign up for the Inca Trail?

I love hiking and being outdoors, and I also wanted to challenge myself and do something out of my comfort zone. So when this came up along with the opportunity to raise money for Harry’s Pals, it was an easy decision to sign up.

What are you most looking forward to?

Reaching Machu Picchu! I’m really looking forward to the whole experience though – the incredible scenery, being in the mountains, experiencing Peru,  making some amazing friendships along the way and sharing an experience we’ll probably be talking about for years to come.

What are you most nervous about?

Definitely the altitude. I can train for the walking, hills and long days, but altitude is the one thing I can’t really prepare for or know how my body will react to.

How’s the training going?

Pretty well! I already enjoy hiking, but I’m trying to make sure I get plenty of miles and hills into my legs before October. The challenge is fitting the training around work and everything else – although the closer it gets, the more real it’s starting to feel!

What does Harry’s Pals mean to you?

It’s a wonderful charity helping families when they need it most. Taking on a tough few days in the mountains feels very small in comparison, but knowing that every donation can help them support more families gives the challenge a much bigger purpose.
