Machu PiGchu: Getting to Know Gareth Jones and Sandrine Oakes
In October, a team of brave PiGs will take on the iconic Inca Trail in Peru, all in aid of our Charity of the Year, Harry’s Pals.
In this series of articles, we’re introducing you to the people behind the challenge, finding out a little more about what inspired them to take part, how they’re preparing for the adventure and what they’re looking forward to most.
This article is all about Gareth Jones and Sandrine Oakes. We caught up with them to find out more about their Machu PiGchu journey…

Why did you sign up for the Inca Trail?
Gareth caught the bug for hiking challenges and fund raising from completing Kilimanjaro with the PiGs team in 2024. Sandrine became fed up of hearing about it so decided to tag along this time!
What are you most looking forward to?
The challenge itself, especially with a great group of people. Also looking forward to returning to South America and revisiting such a beautiful, unique location.
This will be Sandrine’s first visit to the continent but is a seasoned traveller. She is really excited not least to share hilarious anecdotes from the glass and glazing industry as well as sharing a tent with Gareth.
What are you most nervous about?
The challenge itself. We know we are fit enough to complete the challenge but certain things – like altitude sickness – cannot be legislated for.
How’s the training going?
We are regular gym goers and hikers but to be honest we have not focussed on intensive training until recent weeks.
That said we just completed Yorkshire 3 Peaks which we know is a good benchmark for the challenge. A few more weeks of healthy diet and exercise and we’ll be ready!
We also completed in all the group training sessions – Snowdon, Ben Nevis, Scarfell Pike, Edale Skyline and Yorkshire 3 Peaks.
What does Harry’s Pals mean to you?
Gareth is a friend of Andy’s as well as a member of the board of trustees for Harry’s Pals.
Therefore, we are extremely close to the charity and very aware of the wonderful support it provides to families.
