Soapbox Derby success: Swadlincote’s great entry

For the second year running, Swadlincote Windows has raced the length of Ashby Market Street for the Ashby Soapbox Derby 2025.
The 2024 Soapbox Derby in Ashby De La Zouch was a resounding success, attracting over 5,000 spectators. So, the pressure was on for 2025 to deliver.
The 200-metre course down Ashby Market Street is packed with twists, jumps and chicanes so a reliable car is a must. Swadlincote’s racing entry was a miniature Swadlincote Windows Van entirely made from PVC-U profile. It took the 12-man fabrication team around two and a half weeks to complete.
Race Day
As Sunday 18 May drew closer, it was a warm day, and the crowds were gathering rapidly. Log flumes, camper vans, cakes and various other imaginatively designed vehicles eagerly waited at the pit stop on Brook Street. Every team gets to complete the racecourse 3 times with an average time taken as their result.
This year featured the inclusion of a steep starting ramp for those brave enough, as well as two Kingswood kickers. While some vehicles navigated the kickers with grace, others crashed into the hay bales on either side, resulting in some eventful photos. Swadlincote Windows completed three races without any crashes, scratches, or dents, achieving a time of 22 seconds.
Charity
This year, Swadlincote Windows supported Battersea, a charity that rehomes cats and dogs. It’s a cause close to their hearts, and over the past few months, they’ve raised money through various showroom initiatives, including staff raffles, donation boxes, and food gift sales.
Swadlincote’s Director, Mick McGuinness, also ran the London Marathon in aid of Battersea. He commented: “many of the staff here own rescue dogs, including myself, so this cause really resonates with us. It’s incredibly rewarding to support an organisation like Battersea that makes such a difference to the lives of cats and dogs.”
Result
Despite their best efforts Swadlincote Windows finished in 10th place but it was another thrilling race in the books. Swadlincote Windows is proud to have taken part in such a fun and meaningful community event. From the creative build to the cause it supported, the 2025 Ashby Soapbox Derby was a memorable experience for the whole team.
