GGF Director celebrates women in fenestration

According to Lauren Mawford, Director of the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF), Professional development plays an important role in helping people build successful careers, develop new skills and progress into leadership positions.

On Women in Fenestration Network Professional Development Day, that took place on the 25 June 2026, it was also an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women across the industry and recognise the positive impact they continue to have on the sector.

Opportunities available

For Lauren, her own career journey is said to highlight the opportunities available within glass and glazing, and why encouraging more women into the industry remains so important.

Lauren joined the GGF in 2022, bringing with her extensive experience across compliance, health and safety and operational management within the construction sector.

Since then, she has continued to champion the work of the Federation while supporting members through a period of significant change across the industry.

‘One of few women in the room’

Looking back on her own career, Lauren has seen first-hand how opportunities for women within construction and fenestration have evolved.

“When I first started my career in construction, it was not uncommon to be one of very few women in the room,” said Lauren.

“Today, that is changing. We are seeing more women across all areas of the industry, from technical and operational roles through to senior leadership positions. That is a really positive development for the sector.”

While there is undoubtedly still progress to be made, Lauren believes the industry is moving in the right direction and creating more opportunities for people from all backgrounds.

“The industry benefits from different perspectives, experiences and ideas,” she explained. “The more diverse our workforce becomes, the stronger our sector will be.”

Supporting businesses

For Lauren, one of the most rewarding aspects of her role is helping to support businesses while also promoting the opportunities available across the glass and glazing industry.

Many people still know very little about the sector, despite the vital role it plays in delivering safer, more sustainable and energy-efficient buildings.

“The glass and glazing industry has so much to offer, but many people simply do not realise the range of careers available,” said Lauren.

“Whether your interests are technical, operational, commercial, training or leadership focused, there are opportunities to develop and build a successful career within this industry.”

Professional development ‘key’

Professional development remains a key part of ensuring people can continue to grow throughout their careers.

From training and mentoring to gaining new qualifications and taking on leadership roles, investing in personal development benefits both individuals and the wider industry.

Lauren believes it is important that businesses continue to encourage learning and create opportunities for people to progress.

“People are at the heart of our industry,” she said. “When businesses invest in their people, they are investing in the future of their organisation and the future of the sector as a whole.”
