Getting to know: Kelly’s Heroes Climb Kilimanjaro – Gareth Jones

As part of the Kelly’s Heroes Climb Kilimanjaro charity fundraiser, we are getting to know the team taking on the gruelling  5,895m high mountain climb between 12-21 September 2024.

Gareth Jones, Managing Director of Solar Fabrications and recently appointed Chair of the Board at FENSA, explains what he is doing to prepare for the climb, and why he is doing it.

Name: Gareth Jones

Job title: Managing Director

Company: Solar Fabrications

How long you’ve been there? 2.5 years

How long have you been in the glazing industry in total? 26 years

Why are you climbing Kilimanjaro? To support a wonderful charity which sadly is very much needed, not least in our sector as well as finding a focus to lose weight, get fit and a healthy lifestyle, in preparation for my 50th birthday on the day we descend.

How are you preparing? I stopped drinking alcohol six months ago. I walk and hike every week and attend the gym regularly. I am coming up to having lost three stone and raring to go – can’t wait.

What are you least looking forward to? The descent – rapidly downhill can be a struggle on the knees and toes.

What are you most looking forward to? Reaching the summit and sharing the exhilaration with a great group of people.

What does Kelly’s Heroes mean to you? The work and dedication of those involved in the charity is growing on me daily. The sense of well-being I have assumed on my fitness journey, not least in terms of own mental health has really put things into perspective.
