To celebrate the PEOPLE of the glazing sector who regularly support all things PiGs, we make them our Star in the Sty, as a small thank you for their support. This week’s Star is Glazpart’s Andy Lobban! Find out more about Andy below.

Name: Andy Lobban

Company: Glazpart

Been going to PiGs since: I would say I started going around 2018

Favourite PiGs location: Birmingham is always good, nice and close to home too. Manchester is a great City to go out in, but I have a soft spot for PiGs Bristol. It’s a good location, a bit smaller and you get the chance to speak to nearly everyone that goes.

Tipple of choice: You’ll rarely catch me saying no to a beer, but a JD and coke will always be the drink I finish the night with.

What’s the best thing about PiGs? Great to catch up with people you know, meet people you don’t, and see so many people in the industry get together and do a bit of networking.

What makes PiGs different from other industry events? You are always guaranteed a good atmosphere at PiGs, it’s a relaxed friendly setting where everyone will give each other a bit of time to get to know you better and build new and existing relationships.

Who’s someone you love catching up with at a PiGs event? Without naming names, there are always a few face you know a bit better than others and some you know will guarantee you an entertaining evening, but a big part of PiGs is meeting new people at each event and enjoying your evening with them.

Most memorable PiGs moment (either at an event or an event in particular)? I’ve had some really good nights out with PiGs, a couple of particularly memorable nights in both Birmingham and Manchester, but the Irish bar after the last PiGs in Newcastle will take some beating, Great night.

Where in the world would you take PiGs to if you could? Well, that is a very open question. PiGs have already been to some great venues, and I heard Dublin maybe in the pipeline for next year which would be great fun.

If we were planning on going a little further afield and no one had to worry about getting home or working on the Friday, then why not go somewhere we are guaranteed a few beers in the sun? All in the name of the glazing obviously.

Who should come to the next PiGs event (in one sentence)? Anyone and everyone that has anything to do with glazing, new or old, that wants to talk shop and meet more people in the same industry as them.

Pilkington UK, part of the NSG Group, is marking its 200th anniversary this year (2026), celebrating two centuries of pioneering manufacturing that changed the way we design and use buildings.

Beginnings

It was 1826; the year the internal combustion engine was patented, the first photograph was taken, and Beethoven was at his creative peak.

In Merseyside, North West England, four local families joined forces to open ‘St Helens Crown Glass Company’, and it is still going strong 200 years later.

The business was renamed Pilkington Brothers in 1849 when William and Richard Pilkington acquired the company. This became Pilkington Ltd in 1894, and the name now remains a byword for quality and innovation in glassmaking.

In its lifetime, Pilkington UK has consistently pioneered the development of new processes and technologies that have enabled the manufacture of the highest-quality glass at an industrial scale.

An international brand

The company went international in 1892, first opening agencies to sell its products in Europe, North America, Australia and beyond, and ultimately opening factories in countries including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, America and South Africa.

By the 20th century, Pilkington UK had become a leading force in the global glass industry, and a pivotal moment came in 1959 when Sir Alastair Pilkington invented the float process, where molten glass is floated in a bath of molten tin.

This transformational innovation meant that, for the first time, large, perfectly flat and clear sheets of glass could be reliably manufactured continually and to a uniform thickness.

It was an invention that would change glassmaking and modern architecture forever and to this day, float glass is the most widely produced form of glass in the world.

Part of the world’s most iconic buildings

Over the years, Pilkington UK glass has also been used in iconic cars from the Model T Ford to classic British brands like Land Rover, Rolls Royce, and Aston Martin. It’s also been used in the world’s best-known buildings, from the Empire State Building in New York, Pyramide du Louvre in Paris, to the UK’s tallest building The Shard, London.

While also operating factories around the world Pilkington UK has always been committed to St Helens, employing more than 11,500 people in the town at its peak.

In 2006, Pilkington UK became a wholly-owned subsidiary of NSG Group and today it employs around 3,000 people at sites across the UK.

It has developed a portfolio of products with qualities that the company says the original founders could never have imagined, including Pilkington Activ, the world’s first self-cleaning glass, Pilkington Suncool, which reflects solar radiation to help keep buildings cool, and Pilkington K Glass, which acts as an insulator to help keep buildings warm.

The company also plans to unveil investments this year at its St Helens base, with new coating technologies unlocking a new generation of architectural glass products.

Neil Syder, Managing Director of Pilkington UK, said: “To play my small part in the 200-year story of such an historic and iconic British brand is truly a privilege.

“From our home in St Helens, Pilkington UK has made an impact around the world and I’m proud of all of our colleagues, past and present, who have contributed to its amazing story.

”And Pilkington UK continues to play a pioneering role in the global glassmaking industry.

“In 2025, we completed a multi-million-pound investment in a new sustainable production line at our Greengate Works site, in a move to decarbonise our operations and work towards achieving a 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieving net zero by 2050. This year we continue to invest in our St Helens coating facilities.

“As part of NSG Group, Pilkington UK continues to be a byword for quality and innovation in glassmaking, which has embodied this business since 1826.”

A new guide from Made Smarter is helping manufacturers cut through the noise around artificial intelligence (AI), and focus on what actually works on the factory floor.

AI Adoption in Manufacturing: A Practical Toolkit from Made Smarter has been developed to support SME leaders navigating one of the most significant technological shifts in decades.

While awareness of AI is high, many manufacturers remain unsure where to start, how to manage risk, and how to translate potential into measurable business value.

Rather than focusing on complex technologies, the guide sets out a clear, task-first approach, helping businesses identify where AI can reduce low-value work, improve decision-making, and strengthen day-to-day operations.

At the centre of the toolkit is a structured “Scan, Pilot, Scale” framework, reflecting how manufacturers successfully adopt AI in practice. It encourages businesses to start with real operational challenges, test solutions safely, and scale only what proves its value in live environments.

The launch comes as AI is increasingly recognised as critical to the UK’s industrial future, yet many SMEs remain cautious. Unlike office-based tools, AI in manufacturing operates in complex, safety-critical environments, where decisions can directly impact quality, productivity and compliance.

The toolkit has been co-authored by Made Smarter North West, the government-backed programme helping SME manufacturers adopt technology and digital skills, and Professor Chris Dungey, AI Champion for Advanced Manufacturing at the Department for Business and Trade and Chief Technology Officer at the High Value Manufacturing Catapult.

Professor Chris said: “AI has moved quickly into everyday business, but for many manufacturers, especially SMEs, it still feels complex, distant and risky. That is why practical adoption matters more than technical novelty.

“This toolkit is not about pushing manufacturers faster than they are ready to go. It is about helping them move with confidence, avoid common pitfalls, and ensure AI delivers measurable impact rather than stalled pilots.

“If the UK is to realise the productivity, resilience and competitiveness gains that AI can offer, we must focus less on isolated success stories and more on repeatable adoption pathways. This toolkit is an important step in that direction, helping manufacturers move from curiosity to capability, and from pilots to scaled industrial impact.”

The toolkit cuts through the hype to explain what AI means in practical manufacturing terms, from predicting outcomes and sensing issues to automating everyday tasks. It explores the realities facing SME manufacturers, including common barriers such as fragmented data and limited capacity, and sets out a clear adoption pathway based on Scan, Pilot, Scale.

Real-world case studies show how businesses such as D Squared Product Development, Ritherdon & Co., Arden Dies and ELE Advanced Technologies are already applying AI to improve design workflows, streamline order processing, enhance customer interaction, and monitor machine performance.

The guide is further supported by expert insight from the Manufacturing Technology Centre, alongside analysis of workforce impacts and the skills required to support adoption.

Kevin Smith, Lead Technology Adoption Specialist at Made Smarter North West, said: “AI is no longer out of reach for SMEs. It doesn’t require major investment or specialist teams to get started.

“The opportunity now is to act with confidence and clarity. By starting small, testing safely and focusing on real business value, manufacturers can turn AI from an abstract concept into a practical tool for growth.

“Made Smarter provides hands-on support to help manufacturers adopt digital technologies, including AI, in a way that delivers measurable results. From initial diagnostics and roadmapping through to pilot projects and scaled implementation, the programme helps businesses move at a pace that suits them.”

Made Smarter supports SME manufacturers, giving them access to expert technology advice, leadership training, digital skills development and match-funded grants to boost productivity, drive innovation, create high-value jobs and cut carbon.

Carlisle Window Systems, a business that has reportedly grown from a small local installer into one of Cumbria’s leading window and door specialists – is celebrating 30 years of partnership with Eurocell.

Carlisle Window Systems has been manufacturing and installing Eurocell systems, including Logik and Modus.

The relationship is built on shared values of reliability, technical excellence and long-term collaboration. Eurocell’s support – from specification guidance and U-value calculations to building regulation advice – has been central to Carlisle’s growth and ability to deliver high-quality, efficient solutions for homeowners and developers.

Liam Kelly, Managing Director of Carlisle Window Systems, said: “Our growth over the last 30 years has been built on strong, long-term partnerships, and Eurocell has played a key part in that journey. Working with a supplier that consistently supports us with technical expertise and shares our values has been fundamental to our success”

“In particular, the support and expertise of Stephen Greaves, North East Technical Engineer has been invaluable. His knowledge and commitment over the years have played an important role in helping us achieve the position we’re in today.”

Tony Morrison, Head of National Key Accounts at Eurocell, said: “Carlisle Window Systems is a fantastic example of what long-term investment, family values, and strong partnerships can achieve. We’re proud to have worked alongside them for decades and look forward to supporting their continued growth in both PVC-U and aluminium.”

Through this partnership, Carlisle has expanded into new markets, including timber frame projects using Eurocell’s InSite window system.

This factory-fitted solution allows fully finished windows to be installed directly into panels during production, reducing labour, speeding up build programmes, and ensuring a wind and watertight structure from day one. Recent developments also include aluminium bi-folds, sliders, and windows, as well as a commitment to sustainability through Eurocell’s recycling and waste take-back schemes.

Led by father and son, Jock and Liam Kelly, Carlisle Window Systems remains a family-run business at its heart. Eurocell says it is proud to support a partner that also gives back to its community, recently exemplified by a project with Chrysalis – a local Carlisle charity supporting young adults with disabilities – where windows and doors were supplied and installed free of charge on its setting.

Barnet Council’s Construction Supply Chain Programme has been developed to connect local manufacturers with contractors and developers working across the borough, one of which includes Crystal Units.

The initiative focuses on keeping investment, skills and opportunity within the local area, while raising standards across construction projects through closer collaboration between trusted suppliers and delivery teams.

By creating a direct link between local businesses and major developments, the programme supports more efficient project delivery, encourages the use of regional expertise, and helps ensure that high-quality, specialist products are specified from the outset.

Benefits for Crystal Units

Crystal Units, a West Hendon-based glazing manufacturer with over 30 years of experience, is among the businesses benefiting from the initiative. Through the programme, the company has been able to introduce its advanced glazing solutions to a wider network of construction professionals, while demonstrating how modern glass technologies can play a key role in improving building performance.

With increasing pressure on the industry to reduce carbon emissions and improve thermal efficiency, glazing is becoming a more critical part of early design decisions. Solutions such as C.U.in insulating glass and NUCLR heated glass are designed to support this shift, offering improved insulation, reduced heating demand and enhanced comfort, without compromising on architectural design. These technologies align with the broader industry move towards more sustainable, performance-led construction.

The programme has also helped strengthen relationships between local suppliers, contractors and developers, encouraging better collaboration and more streamlined delivery across projects within Barnet and beyond.

‘Bringing the right people together’

Phil Hallworth, Technical & Sales Director at Crystal Units, commented: “Programmes like this are important because they bring the right people together early on. When local manufacturers are part of the conversation from the start, projects benefit. There’s better understanding of what’s possible, better coordination, and ultimately a higher standard of delivery.

We’ve seen a real shift towards performance-led design, especially around energy efficiency and sustainability. Glazing has a big role to play in that, and being able to demonstrate our solutions directly to contractors and developers through this programme has been valuable.”

Closing

Crystal Units’ involvement in Barnet Council’s Construction Supply Chain Programme reflects a wider commitment to supporting local industry while contributing to the future of high-performance construction. By combining technical expertise with strong regional partnerships, the company continues to play an active role in delivering projects that prioritise quality, efficiency and long-term value.

As part of its ‘Give to Gain’ spotlight on Women in Fenestration, organisers of the FIT Show, pose the questions to Charlotte Hawkes, Founder and Director at Keystone Market Research.

Q: Job title, company, and how long you’ve been in fenestration?

Founder & Director, Keystone Market Research, almost 20 years!

Q: What do you love most about working in the sector?

The people! It’s such a friendly, supportive industry.

Q: The IWD theme for 2026 is Give to Gain – what has the fenestration industry given you that you didn’t expect, personally or professionally?

So much, it took 17 year old me who had no idea what I wanted to do and gave me the opportunity to travel the world, create some brilliant memories, develop my career, a sense of belonging in this community, and ultimately build a business that now gives me the work/life balance to be able to spend lots of time with my young daughter before she goes to school while also feeling like I’m contributing meaningfully to companies throughout the industry with my research.

Q: Who has ‘given to gain’ for you – a woman who opened doors or shared opportunities?

There are so many women in this industry that have inspired and supported me over the years – too many to name. All the wonderful ladies I completed Paddle2Pedal with for GM Fundraising all those years ago deserve special mention though – I think that challenge and spending so much time with such strong amazing women had a profound effect and was a turning point for lots involved.

But I think it’s important to mention, particularly in a, progressively less so but still, male-dominated industry, that it’s the men that have opened doors and shared opportunities to women also that makes a massive difference.

Women’s equality doesn’t change without change from both sides of the spectrum, and I’ve been extremely grateful over the years to have had so many brilliant male & female champions and mentors.

So probably not answering the question properly, but sincerely, I think overall my biggest supporter who has ‘given to gain’ for me was my previous boss Chris Alderson from Edgetech, who gave me the trust, support and experience at a senior level to allow me to grow, and then despite it being the opposite of what he wanted, the confidence to leave the company to set up my current business!

Q: How do you plan to ‘give to gain’ over the coming months – mentoring, knowledge sharing, etc.?

Whether it’s an introduction to a customer I’m working with, a free report to help them understand the market and position themselves or their customers more effectively, or even just to cheer them from the sidelines – I love to support and see other women in our industry be successful and I jump at every opportunity to be part of making that happen.

Q: Describe women in fenestration in one word

Allies.

As part of its ‘Give to Gain’ spotlight on Women in Fenestration, organisers of the FIT Show, pose the questions to Michelle Wright, Marketing Partner and Strategic Lead at DoBetter.

Q: Job title, company, and how long you’ve been in fenestration

Marketing Partner, Strategic Lead, DoBetter
Time in Fenestration: Over 10 years.

Q: What do you love most about working in the sector?

100% the people. It is a relationship led industry where you can genuinely make an impact. You are not just delivering activity, you are shaping how businesses grow, how they present themselves, and how they build trust with their customers.

What makes that possible is the people behind it. When you genuinely care about the outcome, it creates the opportunity to lead, not just follow.

Q: What has the fenestration industry given you that you did not expect?

An unexpected slightly geeky interest in windows and doors that I did not see coming, and that’s because you cannot help but get drawn in by all the passion. I love the huge role great marketing plays at the heart of it, it’s so influential and everyone recognises that.

Most importantly, it has given me a network of people who have become great friends. Their support, particularly over the past few months has meant more than they probably realise. That sense of community is something I did not expect when coming into double glazing, but it is honestly one of the most valuable things the industry has given me.

Q: Who has “given to gain” for you – a woman who opened doors or shared opportunities?

I would struggle to name just one, as I have been incredibly fortunate to have so many women support me along the way.

If I were to highlight a few, Sarah Ball, Lauren Edwards, Kath Swinglehurst, Karen Lund, Sam Nukey, Sally Gingell, Clare White, Sat Dhillon, Donna Crockatt and Nickie West all amazing women who have had a real impact on my journey.

Q: How do you plan to “give to gain” over the coming months?

I have always been a strong advocate for bringing fresh talent into both marketing and the wider industry. That comes through mentoring, sharing knowledge openly, and ensuring people have visibility for the work they are doing.

That will remain a clear focus as I establish my new venture, where I am actively working with young people to help shape their future. At the same time, through DoBetter, I want to continue raising the standard of marketing across the industry so businesses can grow in the right way.

Q: Describe women in fenestration in one word.
