Reynaers Aluminium UK has launched a new GQA-accredited training course to enhance technical competency in the fabrication and installation of its aluminium window systems.

The ‘Reynaers Windows Systems Overview’ course forms part of a wider training programme developed by Reynaers to build skills and knowledge across the supply chain – supporting the consistent, high-quality fabrication and installation of its premium systems.

This theory-based training session focuses on four key Reynaers window systems – SlimLine 38, SlimLine 68, ConceptSystem 77 and MasterLine 8 – providing detailed guidance on best practice to ensure accuracy, performance and compliance with current regulations.

Participants will gain a deeper understanding of fabrication and installation processes, including fixing strategies, achieving flush-fit detailing, and preparing systems to accommodate double and triple glazing units. The course also explores how glazing options influence thermal performance, weight load and hardware requirements, as well as the importance of correct fixing positions to support alignment and long-term performance.

In addition, the training examines the impact of the Building Safety Act (BSA) on the specification and design of glazing and window systems, helping fabricators and installers work confidently within evolving legislation. This includes insight into system-level testing and certification.

Paul Guest, Training Officer at Reynaers Aluminium UK, said: “At Reynaers we always aim to offer a complete package of support so that our customers feel confident in working with our systems – and ensuring they meet the design specification.

“The performance of any aluminium system ultimately depends on the fabrication and installation process. Our GQA-accredited training is designed to support fabricators and installers in developing an enhanced understanding of the systems to support accuracy and ease of use.”

Underpinning its commitment to training and customer support, Reynaers also offers its own comprehensive training modules. The free-of-charge ‘R’ module training courses are designed to enhance technical competence and cover product specific training, digital tools support, fabrication and blue box training, as well as site visits.

Paul added: “By investing in training, we are helping to ensure Reynaers systems are installed as intended, supporting performance, compliance and long-term reliability on every project.”

The GQA course is free of charge and delivered by experienced trainers with more than 35 years of industry expertise.

It will be delivered on-site at Reynaers’ Knowledge Centre in Birmingham with dates available in May and June 2026. Visit Reynaers dedicated GQA web page now and request further information on one of the upcoming training sessions.

A new guide from Made Smarter is helping manufacturers cut through the noise around artificial intelligence (AI), and focus on what actually works on the factory floor.

AI Adoption in Manufacturing: A Practical Toolkit from Made Smarter has been developed to support SME leaders navigating one of the most significant technological shifts in decades.

While awareness of AI is high, many manufacturers remain unsure where to start, how to manage risk, and how to translate potential into measurable business value.

Rather than focusing on complex technologies, the guide sets out a clear, task-first approach, helping businesses identify where AI can reduce low-value work, improve decision-making, and strengthen day-to-day operations.

At the centre of the toolkit is a structured “Scan, Pilot, Scale” framework, reflecting how manufacturers successfully adopt AI in practice. It encourages businesses to start with real operational challenges, test solutions safely, and scale only what proves its value in live environments.

The launch comes as AI is increasingly recognised as critical to the UK’s industrial future, yet many SMEs remain cautious. Unlike office-based tools, AI in manufacturing operates in complex, safety-critical environments, where decisions can directly impact quality, productivity and compliance.

The toolkit has been co-authored by Made Smarter North West, the government-backed programme helping SME manufacturers adopt technology and digital skills, and Professor Chris Dungey, AI Champion for Advanced Manufacturing at the Department for Business and Trade and Chief Technology Officer at the High Value Manufacturing Catapult.

Professor Chris said: “AI has moved quickly into everyday business, but for many manufacturers, especially SMEs, it still feels complex, distant and risky. That is why practical adoption matters more than technical novelty.

“This toolkit is not about pushing manufacturers faster than they are ready to go. It is about helping them move with confidence, avoid common pitfalls, and ensure AI delivers measurable impact rather than stalled pilots.

“If the UK is to realise the productivity, resilience and competitiveness gains that AI can offer, we must focus less on isolated success stories and more on repeatable adoption pathways. This toolkit is an important step in that direction, helping manufacturers move from curiosity to capability, and from pilots to scaled industrial impact.”

The toolkit cuts through the hype to explain what AI means in practical manufacturing terms, from predicting outcomes and sensing issues to automating everyday tasks. It explores the realities facing SME manufacturers, including common barriers such as fragmented data and limited capacity, and sets out a clear adoption pathway based on Scan, Pilot, Scale.

Real-world case studies show how businesses such as D Squared Product Development, Ritherdon & Co., Arden Dies and ELE Advanced Technologies are already applying AI to improve design workflows, streamline order processing, enhance customer interaction, and monitor machine performance.

The guide is further supported by expert insight from the Manufacturing Technology Centre, alongside analysis of workforce impacts and the skills required to support adoption.

Kevin Smith, Lead Technology Adoption Specialist at Made Smarter North West, said: “AI is no longer out of reach for SMEs. It doesn’t require major investment or specialist teams to get started.

“The opportunity now is to act with confidence and clarity. By starting small, testing safely and focusing on real business value, manufacturers can turn AI from an abstract concept into a practical tool for growth.

“Made Smarter provides hands-on support to help manufacturers adopt digital technologies, including AI, in a way that delivers measurable results. From initial diagnostics and roadmapping through to pilot projects and scaled implementation, the programme helps businesses move at a pace that suits them.”

Made Smarter supports SME manufacturers, giving them access to expert technology advice, leadership training, digital skills development and match-funded grants to boost productivity, drive innovation, create high-value jobs and cut carbon.

A lack of construction professionals could derail plans to deliver low-carbon housing, experts have warned in a new report from home improvement specialist Eurocell.

Eurocell’s State of Sustainable Construction 2026 report brings together housing market analysis with insight from industry and academic contributors to assess the sector’s readiness for upcoming regulatory and retrofit demands. While the report focuses on housing standards and delivery, contributors warn that skills and workforce capacity remain a critical constraint.

Dr Patricia Xavier, Programme Lead for the BSc Construction Management degree at NMITE, who contributed to the report, said the industry is approaching a tipping point:

“We are at a critical point where we are losing experienced people who can’t pass on their skills and mentoring to the new generation. We need a bird’s-eye view of the skills needed, aligning sector-wide training in a way that is equitable across the country, before this intellectual capital retires out of the industry.”

Eurocell’s analysis in the State of Sustainable Construction 2026 report highlights that the scale of low-carbon housing delivery now being discussed, including retrofit programmes and higher standards for new homes, will place additional pressure on an already stretched workforce. The report identifies a growing gap between rising policy ambition and the practical capacity to deliver, particularly in terms of trained people on the ground.

It also highlights that skills linked to energy efficiency, retrofit, low-carbon heating and building performance are particularly exposed, with smaller firms and regional supply chains often finding it hardest to access training and upskilling opportunities.

The report concludes that while regulation and funding will play a major role in shaping the future of housing, progress will also depend on retaining experience, improving knowledge transfer and building a clearer, more coordinated approach to skills development across the sector. Without that focus, the industry risks losing further capacity at a point when housing delivery and decarbonisation demands are accelerating.

Martin Benn, Head of New Build at Eurocell, said: “Skills are now one of the biggest constraints on delivering low-carbon housing at scale. As standards rise and retrofit activity accelerates, the industry needs confidence that training, accreditation and on-site capability can grow at the same pace. Without that, even well-intentioned policy risks falling short at the point of delivery.”

The full findings are available in Eurocell’s State of Sustainable Construction 2026 report.

REHAU says recruiting skilled workers for a career within the fenestration industry is becoming increasingly challenging and those within the sector are aware that it needs to do more to attract talent.

The company said the industry is more innovative and self-reliant than those outside of the sector give it credit for, but it must do more to highlight the breadth of innovation, technical expertise and career pathways it offers if it is to address the growing skills shortage.

Fenestration is still widely overlooked by young people and those looking to change careers, who often opt for more traditional and better promoted engineering, defence and construction roles.

This presents both a challenge and an opportunity. With the right engagement, the industry has the potential to attract a new generation of skilled professionals who are looking for hands-on, problem-solving roles that combine high levels of detail with real-world application.

REHAU has been actively involved in supporting skills development through its role with the New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering (NMITE) in Hereford. NMITE offers a practical, project-based engineering degree designed to better reflect the needs of the modern industry.

“NMITE’s approach aligns closely with the reality of working life,” said Martin Hitchin, CEO of REHAU UK. “Students are hands-on from day one, learning how to apply engineering principles rather than just studying them in theory. That practical mindset is exactly what the fenestration industry needs but explaining that to people outside the sector is where we fall short.”

Through its close links with NMITE, REHAU has seen first-hand how exposure to industry can shape career choices. Many students enter engineering degrees without a clear understanding of fenestration but once they are introduced to the sector, they can see the depth and variety of opportunities available.

One such example is Dan James, a recent NMITE graduate who joined REHAU last year after completing his studies. As someone interested in hands-on engineering and problem solving, Dan was drawn to a role that allowed him to apply technical knowledge in a practical environment.

“I wanted to work somewhere where I could really understand how things work, not just at a surface level,” said Dan. “At REHAU, there’s a high level of technical detail, and a real emphasis on learning and development. It’s a great fit for people like me, who enjoy understanding systems inside out.”

Dan’s day-to-day role involves responding to customer technical queries, supporting complex project journeys, and assisting the technical product management team. He believes these varied responsibilities demonstrate just how diverse roles in the fenestration sector can be.

“Before joining the industry, my only knowledge of the fenestration industry came from White Gold!” he added. “In reality, there’s a great mix of creativity, engineering, digital tools and collaboration across international teams. It’s not a static or boring industry at all.”

During the graduate scheme, Dan was supported through structured training, including opportunities to visit facilities overseas. He spent time in Germany, as well as visits to sites in Poland and Mexico with his graduate cohort, helping him build technical understanding while forming strong relationships across the wider REHAU business.

“Seeing how products are made, meeting people across the organisation and understanding different markets makes a huge difference,” said Dan. “It gives you a much broader perspective and helps you develop confidence quickly.”

REHAU believes the industry must be more proactive in promoting itself to students and career-changers. The company offers process and engineering roles to apprentices at its plant in Blaenau Ffestiniog and recycling facility in Runcorn.

Since 2024, it has partnered with Building our Skills which is doing vital work to try and address the skills gap in the industry. Initiatives like these, as well as greater engagement at job fairs, stronger links with educational institutions, and clearer messaging around what a career in the fenestration industry looks like could all help shift perceptions.

“There’s a tendency to undersell ourselves – fenestration is innovative, resilient and full of opportunity for people who want to build meaningful, technical careers”, Martin concluded. “We need to be more vocal about that if we want to secure the skills our industry depends on.”

Hurst has delivered the first in a series of digital marketing and online sales workshops designed to help its customers promote Hurst products effectively online and generate more leads.

The initial workshop was delivered to a first cohort of customers ahead of Christmas and received positive feedback, prompting Hurst to roll out further sessions throughout the year as part of its ongoing Sales Academy programme.

Focused on practical application, the workshops reportedly provide hands-on guidance to help businesses strengthen their presence on platforms such as Instagram and Facebook. Each session is supported by a comprehensive digital toolkit, including ready-to-use templates, content frameworks and step-by-step guides that attendees can continue to use long after the workshop has finished.

Rather than focusing on theory, the sessions are tailored to the realities of running an independent business, offering clear, time-efficient ways to plan content, present products consistently and convert online engagement into enquiries.

Hayley Barker, Head of Marketing at Hurst, said: “We’re a door manufacturer first and foremost, but supporting our customers goes beyond supplying products.

“The feedback from the first workshop showed there’s real value in practical, usable marketing support. These sessions are about giving people tools and guidance they can actually apply, rather than adding another task to their to-do list.”

The workshops are designed to help customers increase visibility and generate leads for Hurst products, including the recently introduced S-Class solid core composite door range and Securicore reinforced panel, which achieves PAS 24 when tested as part of a full doorset.

Each session covers content planning, messaging, product presentation as well as guidance on measuring results, supported by editable templates and reference materials that can be adapted to suit individual businesses, helping to maintain consistency while reducing the time needed to market effectively online.

“With trading conditions still challenging, strong online communication can make a real difference,” added Hayley. “The businesses that perform well are often the ones that communicate clearly and consistently.

“These workshops form part of our wider commitment to supporting customers over the long term, combining practical marketing support with a product range designed to help them compete.”

Further Sales Academy workshops are planned throughout the year.

As the regulatory construction landscape continues to evolve, Nigel Headford, Chief Executive at the Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB), champions the launch of the Built Environment Competence Hub as a vital source of accessible guidance.

For construction professionals, the regulatory landscape has changed fundamentally in recent years. With competence firmly in the spotlight, accountability is front and centre, documentation is essential, and expectations from clients and regulators are rightly higher.

In this environment, obligations and expectations must be crystal clear. That is why the Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB) welcomes the recent launch of the Built Environment Competence Hub.

Developed by BSI in collaboration with the Industry Competence Steering Group (ICSG) and the Building Safety Regulator (BSR), the Hub provides a single, trusted source of competence frameworks, standards and practical guidance for the entire built environment sector.

As a central, trusted location to access up-to-date, authoritative information, the Hub brings together the work of the ICSG Sector Led Groups, as well as resources and insights from BSI and other key stakeholders.

As a space to engage on competence and share best practice, visitors to the site can find all the key resources they need in one place.

Under the Building Safety Act and related reforms, clearly demonstrated competence is a critical aspect of compliance and accountability. The central nature of the Hub ensures we are all singing from the same hymn sheet.

Crucially, the Hub is the product of coordinated, sector-wide leadership. The ICSG was established to respond to the need for a more joined-up approach to competence following the Grenfell tragedy and by working alongside BSI, it has upheld the collaborative approach the construction industry needs to take.

Easy access to reliable guidance helps reduce ambiguity and strengthen decision-making across projects, strengthening relationships between contractors and clients.

Representing the entire aluminium in construction supply chain, CAB strongly supports initiatives that raise professional standards and promote accountability.

Committed to ensuring the best outcomes for aluminium manufacturers, system designers, fabricators, and installers, we recognise the importance of accessible, reliable guidance that helps our members navigate the changing regulatory landscape with greater confidence.

At CAB, we are fully committed to raising standards and supporting our members to play their part. But we cannot do it alone. The Built Environment Competence Hub shows that collaborative leadership, transparency and shared commitment are what’s needed to ensure a safer, brighter future for the UK construction sector.

At CAB, we give it our full backing and encourage our members and the wider industry to take a look at this valuable resource.

For more information about CAB, visit www.c-a-b.org.uk.

Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) President, Mike Butterick, has issued a clear warning to the glass and glazing sector on the business-critical impact of regulation and the need to adapt fast to an era of unprecedented change.

Speaking at the GGF’s Industry Connect event, held at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Mike warned that the regulatory framework was now “more complicated and challenging than it has ever been before”, and that the sector must treat compliance and engagement with policymakers as core strategic priorities, not a back-office task.

He said the publication of the Future Homes Standard [still imminent] was just the tip of the iceberg, with even bigger changes for the sector coming down the line with an expected revision of Document Q.

“You need to be aware that there is a conversation ongoing that will potentially update and extend Document Q away from just new build housing in England and apply it to accessible replacement windows and doors”, he told attendees.

“Now that’s big. It’s actually got the potential to have a bigger impact on what we do as an industry than the Future Homes Standard. . .

“Whatever the granular detail that lands in these regulations, our products are part of the solution.”

‘Effective engagement more important than ever’

Speaking in front of an audience of 250 GGF and FENSA Members, Mike said that effective engagement with government was more important than ever, highlighting the work of the GGF Consultation Response Group, a cross-industry forum which coordinates responses to government consultations on behalf of the industry.

“We have organised ourselves far more effectively to have a voice for our industry than we have ever done before.

“In that group we have a collective strength and expertise that does not exist anywhere else in our industry. Government recognises our expertise and our leadership, and it means that we can get access to the conversations that are so important in terms of making that influence,” he explained.

He underlined that rising regulatory expectations come with serious consequences for those who fail to meet them. Citing a recent Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) report, which he noted it revealed a “deep structural compliance issue” in the sector.

Not a tick box exercise

“Compliance is not a tick box exercise any more”, he said, “it is far more important than that, because it is the difference between leadership and liability, it is the difference between quality and risk. The OPSS has the power to stop businesses if they are not compliant. That is disruption none of us need, particularly now,” he warned.

Mike advocated for better point of sale conversations with the end consumer to support them in selecting products which made homes, warmer, more comfortable, secure and to help prevent overheating.

He also highlighted the importance of sustainability and product circularity, including as an opportunity to attract new talent to the sector, by demonstrating real environmental impact.

“When you look at our industry through that lens, we are helping to deliver the net zero plan and the energy independence plan that the country has. We can be proud that we are part of that solution.

“As we replace the 80 million windows and doors in the housing stock that do not comply with current regulations, we have to focus on the quality and the performance of those products, and position the value and benefits like never before,” he said.

Time to drive standards

This built on a theme first raised by newly appointed GGF Director, Lauren Mawford, who framed the day around the theme of change and the need to drive up standards across the supply chain.

“When we work together effectively, we do not just respond to change, we shape it”, she said. “The future of this industry is not something that happens to us, it is something that we all build together.”

In addition to networking and an after-party, the day included a discussion around how AI was shaping the industry; and a talk from headline speaker, boxing legend Frank Bruno, on his career and struggles with mental health.

Lauren explained that the new Industry Connect format itself had been deliberately reimagined to reflect this drive for higher standards and modernisation.

“We decided this year we were going to step outside of the traditional format and take a big leap. We wanted to modernise this event and reshape it into something more dynamic, more engaging and more of a celebration of our industry,” she concluded.

In his latest column, Greg Du-feu, Managing Director of Dufeu IT, explains how fabricators can test their Cyber Resilience without spending a fortune.

You don’t need to be a multinational to take cybersecurity seriously — and you don’t need a huge budget to test how strong your defences are.

Every glazing fabricator can assess and improve their cyber resilience using simple, affordable methods that expose weaknesses before criminals do.

Here’s how to test your defences and identify the gaps in your setup — without breaking the bank.

Step 1: Start with a Cybersecurity Risk Assessment

Think of it as a health check for your IT. A professional assessment reviews:

Device patching and antivirus status

Network security (firewalls, routers, ports)

Microsoft 365 and email settings

Backup and disaster recovery readiness

This highlights critical issues that could lead to downtime or data loss.

Step 2: Run a Phishing Simulation

Staff are the number one entry point for attackers. A simple phishing simulation shows how many people would click a fake link or enter credentials.

Use the results to shape awareness training. It’s one of the most cost-effective improvements any business can make.

Step 3: Check Passwords and MFA

You can test the strength of user passwords and ensure MFA is active across critical systems. Use tools like Microsoft Secure Score or your IT provider’s reporting platform.

If MFA isn’t enabled, you’re running unnecessary risk.

Step 4: Review Your Backup Process

Perform a test restore. Don’t just assume it works.

Can you restore data from last night’s backup?

How long does it take?

Are off-site copies protected from ransomware?

Step 5: Simulate an Incident

Gather your management team and run a tabletop exercise. Pick a scenario — ransomware, email breach, or supplier fraud — and talk through how you’d respond.

Questions to ask:

Who would make key decisions?

How would you communicate with staff and customers?

Do you have a contact list for emergency support?

This builds confidence and highlights missing processes.

Step 6: Review Microsoft 365 Security Settings

Most businesses use Microsoft 365, but very few have hardened the environment. Ensure:

MFA is enabled for all users.

Conditional Access restricts risky logins.

Old accounts are disabled.

Audit logs are switched on.

These settings cost nothing to implement and drastically reduce breach risk.

Step 7: Use a Vulnerability Scan

Automated tools can scan your network for open ports, outdated software, and known weaknesses. These scans are affordable and give clear, actionable results.

Step 8: Document and Prioritise Fixes

Testing only helps if you act on it.
List every weakness found, rank by severity, and assign ownership for remediation.

Step 9: Retest Regularly

Cybersecurity isn’t one-and-done. Repeat these tests quarterly or after any major IT change.

Step 10: Bring in an External Expert

Even with internal checks, a fresh set of eyes often finds what you’ve missed. A professional penetration test or security review once a year gives real-world assurance.

Why It’s Worth It

Testing your resilience doesn’t just reduce risk — it saves money long-term. You’ll catch problems before they become breaches and show your clients that you take security seriously.

Final Word

You don’t need enterprise budgets to build enterprise-level protection. You just need a structured, proactive approach.

In his latest column, Greg Du-feu, Managing Director of Dufeu IT, explains why Cybersecurity matters more than ever when it comes to trust between supplier and customer.

In the glazing industry, reputation and reliability are everything. Fabricators build long-term relationships with installers, merchants, and contractors based on trust — trust that deliveries will arrive on time, quotes will be honoured, and data will be handled securely.

But cybersecurity incidents are now one of the biggest threats to that trust. A single breach can shake confidence across your entire supply chain, leaving customers questioning whether they can rely on you again.

Here’s why cybersecurity is now as critical to customer relationships as product quality and delivery times.

The Supply Chain Reality

The glazing industry is more digitally connected than ever. ERP systems link suppliers and fabricators. Quotes and invoices are exchanged via email or online portals. Customer records, job details, and payment data are stored electronically.

Each one of these touchpoints creates opportunity — for you and for attackers.

When one business in the chain is compromised, it doesn’t just affect them — it can expose everyone connected.

How a Cyber Breach Damages Trust

Missed Deadlines & Downtime
A ransomware attack on your ERP system halts production. Installers can’t get product. Contractors miss deadlines. Even if it’s not your fault, you’re the weak link.

Invoice Fraud
Attackers who gain access to your email can impersonate you, sending fake bank details to your customers. Once a customer loses money this way, trust evaporates overnight.

Data Leaks
If customer or supplier details are exposed, you may have to report the breach under GDPR. Clients rarely forget being part of a data incident.

The Ripple Effect

It’s not just about one missed job or one lost customer — it’s about perception.

“Can they really keep our data safe?”

“Will they be reliable next time?”

The damage from one breach can take years to undo, even if your systems are secure afterwards.

Rebuilding and Reinforcing Trust

Be Transparent:
If you suffer an incident, communicate quickly and clearly. Customers value honesty more than silence.

Show Your Credentials:
Certifications like Cyber Essentials Plus or ISO 27001 demonstrate that you’ve taken proactive steps to secure your business.

Document Your Controls:
Publish short cybersecurity statements on your website or in supplier onboarding packs. This reassures clients and meets growing compliance demands.

Review Third-Party Risks:
Assess your own suppliers. A secure partner network protects everyone.

The New Expectation

We’re already seeing large construction firms and councils demanding evidence of supplier cybersecurity before awarding contracts. Within the next few years, this will be standard practice across the entire industry.

By investing early, you’re not just protecting data — you’re future-proofing your credibility.

Real-World Example

A regional fabricator recently faced a phishing attack that led to fake invoices being sent to several of their installer customers. Even though the business quickly resolved it, three long-term partners paused new orders until proof of improved controls was provided.

That’s the real cost of losing trust.

Final Word

Your reputation isn’t built in a day — but it can be damaged in one click.

Cybersecurity isn’t an IT project; it’s a customer relationship investment.
