Shelforce, and its Business Manager Howard Trotter, have been named winner of the Workplace Champion award at the 2026 Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce Awards, which is said to recognise the company’s outstanding commitment to inclusive employment, opportunity and workplace culture.

The Birmingham City Council-owned manufacturer of windows, doors and fire doors for local authority building projects and social housing was one of eight finalists in the category.

For Howard, the award reflects the dedication and character of the entire Shelforce workforce.

“This award belongs to the team,” said Howard. “People often say they couldn’t have achieved something without the people around them, and in this case that really is true. The team represent everything Shelforce stands for and they are the reason we have won this award. They are genuine workplace champions, and every member of staff plays a huge part in the success of Shelforce.”

Shelforce employs 31 people, with 75% of the workforce having a physical or learning disability. Under Howard’s leadership, the company has continued to create opportunities through skills development, progression and inclusive recruitment initiatives.

The GBCC Awards hold special significance for Shelforce after the company won the Excellence for People Development award in 2021 before being named overall Greater Birmingham Business of the Year.

“The GBCC Awards mean a great deal to us,” said Howard. “We are proud to be a Birmingham business. Our team live here, their families are here and we have worked on projects across the city for many years. Birmingham means an awful lot to all of us, so any recognition within Birmingham is fantastic.”

Keylite Roof Windows (Keylite) has appointed Paul Stephens as its new National Account Director to support the continued growth of its housebuilder division in the UK.

With over 20 years of experience across the housebuilder sector, Paul reportedly brings a strong background of sales leadership, national account management and strategic business development.

Paul joins Keylite following a successful career with Kingspan, SIG Distribution, SIG Energy Management and Miller Pattison where he held senior positions.

In his new role, Paul will lead the development of Keylite’s housebuilder offering, supporting national and regional developers to deliver compliant and high-performance new build homes. A key focus will be driving awareness and adoption of Keylite’s ModuLite System, recently recognised with a Housebuilder Product Award for Best Building Fabric Product.

Paul’s appointment is said to come at a critical time for the industry, as housebuilders continue to navigate evolving regulations and the demands of the Future Homes Standard. Working closely with key customers, Paul will help ensure Keylite continues to meet the changing demands of both large-scale developments and smaller self-build projects.

Paul commented: “Keylite has built a strong reputation within the housebuilder sector through its customer focus, innovation and long-standing industry relationships. I’m thrilled to be joining the business at such a crucial time and look forward to helping strengthen our offering, support our customers and drive continued growth across the housebuilder market.”

The appointment follows a period of sustained growth for the housebuilder team, with investment in the graduate sales programme increasing regional customer support and sector-focused initiatives such as the Keystone Group Innovation Day helping strengthen relationships across the industry.

Jim Blanthorne, Managing Director at Keylite, added: “We’re delighted to welcome Paul to the team. His extensive experience, industry knowledge and strong relationships within the sector will be invaluable as we continue to grow the Keylite brand and expand our support for housebuilders.”

Flat Glass Solutions (FGS) has appointed Paul Hughes as Maintenance Engineer, reportedly helping the company fulfil maintenance contracts on both its own range of imported glass processing machinery, as well as offering help with brands outside of its own portfolio.

FGS says Paul brings with him a wealth of engineering experience gained after seven years as maintenance engineer with CT Glass, and prior to that 32 years working with the machinery at Symphony Kitchens.

“The biggest challenge for any glass company is to release a machine for checking and controlling without disrupting production output,” commented Paul Hughes.

“FGS has always understood how glass companies need to operate and our maintenance protocols are designed to accommodate their schedules. Having said that, we are persistent in booking our visits – a regular maintenance protocol is crucial for the long term health of the machinery and we see it as our responsibility to maintain that regularity”.

David Cahill, FGS Managing Director, added: “Paul’s knowledge of the industry and machinery is second to none. He has already proved invaluable to a number of our customers, not just in maintaining FGS sourced equipment, but also problem-solving issues with other third party machinery.

“Having Paul join us at FGS strengthens the overall service offering and keeps us on speed dial by glass processing plants across the country.”

FGS is the UK agent and distributor for a number of high profile glass machinery brands from across Europe and China, including Viprotron, Dieffe, Yinrui and Yuntong, Elephant, Hakon, Tesir Makine and Tenon.

The company says it is committed to providing excellence in local support, while sourcing competitive glass processing solutions in this rapidly evolving market.

The Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB) recently brought together industry experts and members at Loughborough University for its 2026 Technical Conference, with a strong focus on competence across the built environment.

Set against the backdrop of ongoing regulatory reform, the event explored what competence means in practice, from workforce skills through to product specification, and how businesses can respond to increasing scrutiny and accountability.

Nigel Headford, Chief Executive of CAB, said: “This year’s Technical Conference made it clear that competence is now at the heart of our industry. Whether it is people, products or processes, there is a growing expectation for clarity, accountability and evidence across the supply chain.”

A key theme throughout the day was how the industry defines and demonstrates competence.

Daniel Barrowcliffe, Industry Competence Policy Lead at the Building Safety Regulator (BSR), provided insight into the regulator’s work to drive improvements across the sector.

He outlined how policy is evolving to support higher standards, alongside the role of the Industry Competence Committee in shaping guidance for industry.

Focusing on workforce skills, John Mannell of the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) addressed the challenges around proving competency in the fenestration sector.

His session highlighted ongoing developments aimed at creating clearer, more structured routes for individuals and businesses to demonstrate their capabilities.

Carl Woodwiss of Element turned attendees attention to product competency, an area under increasing scrutiny.

He explored the growing importance of correct specification, testing and compliance, and what changes lie ahead for those involved in product selection and project delivery.

Together, the sessions reinforced the need for a more joined-up approach to competence, ensuring alignment between people, products and systems.

Dale Pegler, Technical Director at CAB, added: “The discussions we have had at this year’s conference underline just how important it is for businesses to stay informed and proactive. CAB will continue to support members as they navigate these changes and adapt to new expectations.”

The CAB Technical Conference continues to provide a valuable platform for sharing knowledge and addressing the key challenges facing the aluminium and wider construction sectors.

Business Pilot will be demonstrating how its CRM software can help installers maximise margin and improve customer experience at FIT Show 2027 – despite challenging market conditions.

Rising energy costs, economic uncertainty and a squeeze on household incomes because of the conflict in the Middle East is making business hard won across home improvement and commercial sectors.

At the same time, many installers are struggling to understand how to adapt their businesses to take advantage of the revolution in how we use technology, particularly AI.

Business Pilot will support customers in navigating both, with what will be its biggest ever presence, at the FIT Show, which will be held at the NEC, Birmingham 18-20 May 2027.

“We’re taking a different approach next year”, explained Elton Boocock, Managing Director, Business Pillot.

“We’re delivering lots of individual innovations between now and then, but we’re choosing to focus on the bigger picture of what challenges do installers face today in a very difficult market – and how can they get past them, to lower overheads, drive efficiencies and deliver better service all at once.

“Business Pilot, the integration of AI tools and other software platforms – they’re part of the solution.

“The market is tough but that makes it a very good time to look at your operation, make adjustments that help you to run your business more efficiently today – and equally as importantly, tomorrow.”

Business Pilot gives installers complete visibility of each and every aspect of their operation from lead through to aftercare and everything in between, including installation scheduling.

It features drag-and-drop capability, links to drawings, specifications and images, site video, supplier orders, cost of install, helicopter and detailed analysis of your profitability, while integrating with a wide range of common platforms including FENSA and CERTASS.

According to figures from Business Pilot, year-on-year, the market is currently down around two per cent on where it was in April 2025.

“Things haven’t fallen away in the first quarter of this year in the sense that I think people thought they might”, Elton continued. “There are a couple of caveats to that.

“The market wasn’t great in 2025, and we still haven’t perhaps quite seen the impact of the US-Iranian conflict, which will start to bite in the summer, at about the same time as the energy price cap goes up and we all pay higher energy bills.

“What it highlights is the importance of getting the discipline in your business right now.

“With the increase in the national minimum wage from last month, employment costs have risen significantly, so making sure that you’re using resource effectively by automating the administrative functions of your business, can deliver potentially big savings.

“Knowing the cost of every installation, what products or fitting teams are costing you in call backs, which products deliver the best margin, are equally important.

“We’ll be providing a road map at the FIT Show next year to navigate the market and technological change to make sure that installers capitalise on opportunities and innovations – and don’t get left behind in a rapidly changing commercial environment.”

Business Pilot will be on Stand K36 in Hall 9.

“A visit to the Flower Show a couple of years ago inspired us to manufacture these beautiful timber planters. Crafted by our team with the same care and attention we bring to every joinery project, they’re a perfect way to add colour, character and curb appeal to any property.

“If you’re inspired by the Chelsea look and would like to enhance your own property with bespoke planters or handcrafted joinery, we’d love to help. Get in touch to see how we can bring a touch of Chelsea to your home or business.

“When it comes to planting up your planter, remember to add lots of drainage material at the bottom and fill with good quality soil and compost. The planters are lined with a waterproof rubber paint to ensure your planter is durable and stands the test of time.

“We can produce these planters in any colour to match with your property in either Farrow and Ball or RAL colour.

The celebrations continued when CB Solutions Owner, Chris Burrell, was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognised his decades of dedication and contribution to the industry.

The award was made even more poignant given Chris’ remarkable personal journey over recent years.
CB Solutions said the highlight of the day was undoubtedly seeing Chris receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. His passion for both CB Solutions and the wider industry is said to be unwavering, and this recognition was thoroughly deserved.

The company said it was also incredibly proud to see Kerry recognised on a national stage as a finalist for the Women in MMC Award amongst such a strong field of nominees.

The Fire Door Association was at the Fire Safety Event at the NEC this year, and its Business Development Director, Andrea Taylor, took the opportunity to present to visitors at the UKTC stand – setting out where the fire door sector currently stands, why the Fire Door Association exists and what it is doing to address gaps the sector has identified.

Away from the presentation itself, some of the most valuable moments came from the conversations with people from across the sector.

The conversations were encouraging – genuine interest in what the Fire Door Association is building, recognition of the gaps it’s addressing and enthusiasm from people who have been waiting for exactly this kind of body to exist. It was a reminder that the appetite for change in this sector is real.

The evidence is stark

The theme for last year’s Fire Door Safety Week campaign, which ran from 22 – 26 September 2025, focused on ‘Fire Travels Fast’. New research conducted by the British Woodworking Federation for Fire Door Safety Week revealed a sharp rise in public concern about the fire risks posed by lithium-ion batteries, particularly those found in e-bikes and e-scooters – with over half (59%) of owners saying their fire risk fears have grown since getting one. In addition to this more than a third of people spotted issues with fire doors in their homes.

Then Sentry Fire Safety Group published a white paper in March this year, based on Freedom of Information requests sent to all 296 local authorities in England. 88% responded. The findings should concern anyone working in or around fire safety: 66,860 known non-compliant fire doors currently sitting unaddressed in England’s social housing.

Only 46% of front entrance doors inspected even once since the Fire Safety (England) Regulations came into force in January 2023 – three years ago. Just 36% of fire doors across social housing meeting the minimum FD30 standard and 49% of local authorities with no plan in place to repair or replace the doors they already know are failing.

Alongside this, the FDM Roundtable Report – published in May 2025 with a foreword by Dame Judith Hackitt – found that 85% of respondents on the Constructionline register did not believe the Building Safety Act 2022 applied to them.

What the sector itself is saying

The Fire Door Association’s own Industry Consultation Survey drew responses from 12 different professions – from specifiers and architects through to housing providers, facilities managers and responsible persons.

73% felt the fire door sector was not currently aligned. 69% of respondents had over ten years of experience in the sector – this is not a question of ignorance. It is a question of fragmentation.

The sector’s biggest frustrations: lack of consistent collaboration, no recognised registration for inspectors and fitters, and costs being prioritised over safety.

What the sector said it needed: total alignment across the supply chain, transparency, governance, accountability and clarity.

The Fire Door Association’s response

The Fire Door Association will operate across five areas, each one a direct response to a gap the sector has identified. Membership spanning the entire fire door lifecycle – from Design and Specification to Resident Representatives.

Education, in strategic partnership with FDM Training & Development, raising competency standards across the sector. Standards and Compliance engagement, helping members understand and apply the regulations that govern fire door performance in practice, not just on paper. Industry Representation – the fire door sector has never had a unified voice, and the Fire Door Association is that voice.

Plus, Testing and Certification support, because a certificate is the beginning of the conversation, not the end of it.

The Fire Door Association–FDM partnership drew particular interest. Dame Judith Hackitt visited FDM’s facility in Bury in May 2025 and described what she saw as an exemplar of good practice – hands-on, practical training with rigorous assessment, extending across the entire supply chain. Her conclusion: we should be flagging good practice far more. The Fire Door Association intends to do exactly that.

The Fire Door Association exists for the people in this industry who do feel that weight. Who carry it every day and who want a body beside them that takes it as seriously as they do.

The fire door industry isn’t lacking in knowledge, or even in solutions. What it has lacked is coordination, urgency and leadership. That is what the Fire Door Association is here to provide.
