Macgregor Recruitment’s job seeking Top Tips

Stuart MacGregor, Managing Director of MacGregor Recruitment and the PiGs Jobs Board Sponsor, provides his top tips for those entering the job market in 2026.
-
Update and tailor your CV
Ensure that your CV is up to date with your contact details and most recent job role. Add in keywords, responsibilities and achievements relevant to the role, proof read and spell check to maximise your success. Make sure your LinkedIn profile aligns with your CV.
-
Look on Indeed and Job Boards
If you are actively looking for a new role, you can upload your CV to job boards and sign up for job alerts, allowing recruiters to find your details and approach you with opportunities. Do be mindful that your details will be in the public domain.
-
Make use of Recruitment Agencies
When working within a specific sector such as fenestration, do engage with a quality agency that specialises in the sector.
Many opportunities are not advertised on job boards and agencies often work on roles discreetly. They will have connections with companies relevant to you, understand the industry, and be able to advise you confidentially regarding opportunities and make introductions.
-
Research before applying
You’ve seen a role of interest – now review and make sure that the role aligns with your experience and skills, is commutable and meets your salary expectations.
Also research the company itself – does it have the work culture and values that you are looking for? What is the reason for the vacancy? How is the company performing, and could there be future career progression opportunities?
Check their website, online reviews and even consider checking companies house.
-
Interview Preparation
Once invited for an interview, revisit the vacancy details and anticipate what questions may likely be asked.
Consider your own experiences and achievements for each element of the role so that you have examples in mind to demonstrate to the interviewer that you meet their requirements.
An interview is a two-way process so also prepare questions to find out more about the business, the role and working for them.
