Vertik-Al’s John Park-Davies Celebrates 40 Years in the Industry

Vertik-Al Group Managing Director, John Park-Davies, has recently celebrated his 40th year in the industry, and is said to be continuing to shape the future of architectural powder coating and aluminium finishing innovation across the UK construction industry.
From apprentice to MD
From sweeping floors in a Midlands joinery shop as a teenager to leading the country’s pioneering aluminium finishing business, John’s journey is said to be a testament to passion, perseverance, and lifelong learning.
With a career that began in 1985 as an apprentice in carpentry and joinery, John worked on some of the UK’s most prestigious buildings, and reportedly continues to drive innovation and excellence through his leadership at Vertik-Al and sister company, IKON Aluminium Systems.
“I have always loved pointing out buildings and projects I’ve been a part of over the past 40 years, to anyone that will listen,” said John, “…it fills me with pride.”
Over the course of his career, John has worked his way up from apprentice to industry leader, bringing real-world experience to executive leadership roles and the boardroom.
John added: “The quality of materials and product performance, especially energy efficiency and security are incomparable to when I started,” continues John. He also notes that means of communication and IT have transformed the industry.
Drawing on his own experiences, John has strong views on apprenticeships and training, nurturing talent. “I’m a passionate advocate of apprenticeships,” continued John. “…and I believe that a positive attitude often outweighs experience in the early stages of a career. I believe this is more important than ever.
“In 1985, unemployment was at an all-time high, but today, we have a skills shortage. We need to promote training and personal development; apprenticeships should be a valuable alternative to university.
“Yes, it requires investment, both time and money, but we will create and nurture a skilled and practical generation which can lead the UK construction industry into a new age.”
Looking Ahead
“I have an insatiable work appetite,” John added. “To lead a business like Vertik-Al, that has been at the forefront of the finishing’s market since the 1960s, is deeply satisfying – and I plan to keep driving it like a pioneer!
As John celebrates 40 years in the construction industry, next year also marks two major milestones for the Allumette group of companies: 60 years since Vertik-Al was established and 25 years of Ikon Aluminium Systems.
“It’s an honour to lead two businesses with such a rich legacy and bright future,” concluded John. “To stand at the helm as we approach these incredible anniversaries is both humbling and energising. I’m excited for what’s next and proud of the journey that’s brought me here. I encourage anyone considering a career in construction to do it!”
