AFS Opens Doors for the Next Generation

At Aluminium Fire Systems Ltd (AFS), the next generation of the glazing and fire safety industry is already taking shape, not in strategy documents or press releases, but on the factory floor.
Under the guidance of Managing Director Lauren Walker, AFS is building pathways for young people to enter the industry with confidence, clarity, and hands-on skills that stick.
Earlier this year, students from Fortis Academy joined AFS for a week-long work placement designed to offer real-world experience across the business. The programme included everything from daily health and safety checks, stock-taking and packaging, to shadowing skilled fabricators, reviewing the company’s marketing output, and analysing competitors.
To cap it all off, the students delivered presentations back to the team, building communication and confidence as much as technical awareness.
The feedback was more than encouraging. One student captured the experience perfectly: “There are a few things that are outstanding at AFS. One is that on their socials, they don’t post to impress or pretend to be perfect. They are united, and they care.” That culture of humility and integrity flows through every part of the business, a clear reflection of leadership that believes in substance over spin.
But this isn’t a one-off gesture. AFS is a committed partner of the ‘Building Our Skills’ campaign and regularly attends career fairs to promote the range of opportunities available across fenestration and fire safety. The business has also welcomed groups of Mencap students for guided factory tours, showing that inclusion and education can go hand in hand.
As the sector continues to wrestle with skills shortages, AFS is showing what practical, community-first engagement can look like. While much of the national conversation focuses on digital skills, initiatives like this serve as a timely reminder that technical trades, manufacturing, and on-site roles still offer rich, rewarding careers if young people are given the chance to see them up close.
AFS isn’t just investing in talent. It’s investing in trust, accessibility, and the long-term future of the industry.
